In a stunning move, Iran’s only female Olympic medalist has defected from the country.
Kimia Alizadeh, who is an Olympic bronze medalist in Taekwondo, has announced she has permanently left Iran. She cited hypocrisy and abuse in the country for her decision.
Her decision came after Iran shot down a civilian airliner carrying 176 passengers. All of those on board were killed.
In a post on Instagram, Alizadeh detailed her grievances saying, “I am one of the millions of oppressed women in Iran with whom they have been playing for years. I wore whatever they told me to wear. I repeated everything they told me to say.”
Iran’s disregard for human rights and oppression of women is well documented.
