House Democrats made the argument on Friday during the Senate trial of President Donald Trump that his criticism of impeachment on Twitter and at rallies and press conferences is an impeachable offense.
Trump’s comments about impeachment constitute obstruction of Congress, Democrat impeachment managers from the House alleged.
“The president used his authority, and his office, to wage a relentless and misleading public campaign to attack the impeachment inquiry,” House manager Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) said.
She then argued that since he didn’t submit to the demands of the House to turn over documents and comply with subpoenas of his associates, he was guilty of obstruction.
Trump said to reporters that “there should be a way of stopping it, maybe legally, through the courts.”
