NBC News says Democrat Sen. Doug Jones (AL) may lose his Senate seat to a Republican contender whether he votes against impeachment or not.
Jones has said he isn’t sure House Democrats have proven their case against President Donald Trump and that he may vote to acquit Trump in a Senate trial if Democrats can’t “connect the dots” to his satisfaction.
Jones narrowly won his seat against Roy Moore, who was embroiled in a scandal involving underage girls at the time. Trump carried the state by almost 28 points in 2016.
Alabama Democrats interviewed by NBC said that they wouldn’t support Jones if he didn’t vote to impeach Trump, so Jones could lose his Democrat support base if he votes against impeachment.
Republicans have used Jones’ comments to claim that Democrats in the Senate are divided on impeachment.
