The Virginia Senate has voted to block one of the eight new gun control bills proposed by Democrat Governor Ralph Northam.
Two Democrats on the Judiciary Committee voted with Republicans to block a vote to make it a felony to leave a firearm unsecured where a minor could access it.
The Democrats who voted against the measure said they didn’t want to see lawful gun owners face steeper punishments because of their gun ownership.
Northam had argued that the measure would keep children safe and was a common sense measure. Another measure that would ban so-called assault weapons like AR-15 rifles is also in danger of failing to be passed in the Senate.
100 counties and local governments in Virginia have claimed to be sanctuary entities in defiance of Northam’s gun laws, setting up a showdown over funding and compliance.
