When the New York Times accused former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin in 2017 of putting 2011 shooting victim Gabby Giffords and 19 other Democrats under crosshairs on a map, it ignored its own fact-checkers.
The Times was so rabidly bent on demonizing Palin that it ignored the fact-checkers’ assertions that Palin put the districts under crosshairs, not the lawmakers themselves, recently revealed emails said.
Palin sued the newspaper over its reporting about her, and the suit has met several challenges allowing it to proceed. It is now close to resolution.
The map Palin publicized was nearly identical to a Democrat map that circulated at the same time and showed Republican districts in crosshairs.
The Times admitted that no connection to the shooting was ever established, but didn’t correct the misinformation, even though the shooter in question was found to be mentally ill.
