West Virginia governor Jim Justice (R) has invited counties in Virginia that disagree with new gun control laws to secede from Virginia and join his state.
Justice pointed out that West Virginia was formed when residents wanted to leave Virginia because of its “overreach,” and that the invitation to secede still stands from 1863.
More than 100 local Virginia governments have declared themselves Second Amendment sanctuaries in the wake of new government gun laws that they say violate their constitutional rights.
“West Virginia is an incredible state…If you’re not truly happy with where you are, we stand with open arms to take you from Virginia or wherever you may be,” Justice said. “We stand strongly behind the Second Amendment, we stand strongly behind the unborn.”
Lawmakers in West Virginia’s state legislature are pushing a resolution to plan a special election to approve the acceptance of counties or cities that want to join that state.
