Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas dropped a bombshell announcement that the Supreme Court cannot tolerate further situations like the leaking of the draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade.
During a speech at an event held by the American Enterprise Institute, Justice Thomas made it clear that the leaking of the draft opinion was unprecedented and unthinkable.
Justice Thomas said, “You begin to look over your shoulder, It’s like kind of an infidelity, that you can explain it, but you can’t undo it. I wonder how long we’re going to have these institutions at the rate we’re undermining them, and then I wonder when they’re gone or they are destabilized, what we’ll have as a country — and I don’t think that the prospects are good if we continue to lose them.”
The leaker has done incalculable damage to the integrity and sanctity of the Supreme Court, and Justice Thomas is right to speculate about how this will affect the Supreme Court going forward.
The Supreme Court is no longer an independent body that Americans can look toward to solve contentious political issues.
Fortunately, there is a path forward that could at least mitigate the damage that has been done. If the leaker is found and prosecuted severely, some level of trust may be restored to the nation’s highest court.
