President Trump revealed his pick to replace Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in anticipation of her possible retirement.
According to the Washington Examiner, Trump is “understood to be “saving” U.S. Circuit Judge Amy Coney Barrett” as a replacement for Ginsburg.
The possibility of Barrett joining the Supreme Court first came up during talks about replacing retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Trump is reported to have declared “I’m saving her for Ginsburg” multiple times during the discussions. Kennedy was replaced with Justice Brett Kavanaugh instead.
Barrett currently serves as a judge on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Trump has reportedly shortlisted Barret due to her socially conservative Catholic background.
Rumors are swirling about Justice Ginsburg’s plans for retirement. Ginsburg just underwent major surgery after a lung cancer scare in early 2019. The 86-year-old justice has had multiple brushes with cancer but has claimed that she won’t retire before Trump leaves office.
