Superyachts owned by Russian Oligarchs are disappearing from global tracking systems in an effort to avoid global efforts to seize property in retaliation for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Multiple superyachts have gone dark for months after countries around the world took advantage of sanctions to seize the prized vessels.
Vessels Value, a ship tracking company, told the media that “There are some vessels where we would be previously getting a signal every few minutes from transponders and we are now seeing gaps of months. It’s very likely that some have flicked off the switch and gone into stealth mode.”
Russian oligarchs have been the target of sanctions as the desire of western countries is to sow discontent that will force Russian President Vladimir Putin to either end the war or come to the negotiating table.
So far, such efforts seemed to have little effect, and Russian oligarchs have responded by moving their prized ships to friendly nations that will protect their assets.
The war in Ukraine is beginning to stretch on and Russia has made substantial gains in spite of the heavy losses suffered. Now western nations will need to find a new strategy to bring about peace that doesn’t involve seizing property.
