U.S. Army General Stephen Townsend said that the military believes Russian mercenaries shot down an unarmed drone over Libya last month near Tripoli.
Townsend said he didn’t believe Russia knew it was a U.S. military drone, but that it was refusing to release the wreckage so it could be studied by U.S. military.
Russia said it doesn’t have any mercenaries in the area, but Defense Secretary Mark Esper said he thought Russia was trying to “put its finger on the scale” in the ongoing Libyan civial war.
Any Russian civilians fighting outside that nation are volunteers, the Russian government insists.
Russia has previously acted to support Khalifa Haftar, who is seeking to take Tripoli and topple the internationally recognized Government of National Accord.
