Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) signed legislation on Friday that is intended to remove special privileges from the Disney operation in Orlando that benefits them with taxes and governance.
The bill was passed after Disney CEO Bob Chapek objected to the Parental Rights in Education bill that was recently passed in Florida and signed by DeSantis.
Chapek and others at Disney want to see the education bill, which prevents teachers from teaching young students under fourth grade about LGBTQ+ topics and critical race theory, nullified.
DeSantis said Disney lied about the bill’s contents and that the California-based corporation should stay out of Florida politics.
The surrounding Orange and Osceola counties are concerned that they will have to absorb $1 billion in Disney debt once the special district Disney now operates in is dissolved in 2023, as the bill requires.
