Russian President Vladimir Putin promised his navy on Sunday that it would soon be equipped with hypersonic nuclear strike weapons and underwater nuclear drones, both part of the Russian government’s military rebuilding process currently underway.
Putin made the announcement at the annual review of the country’s military assets that the new weapons were in the final testing phase.
“The widespread deployment of advanced digital technologies that have no equals in the world, including hypersonic strike systems and underwater drones, will give the fleet unique advantages and increased combat capabilities,” Putin said.
Putin threatened to develop and deploy the weapons if the U.S. took steps to deploy intermediate-range nuclear weapons in Europe.
Putin has been working toward the modernization of the Russian military since the West’s negative reaction to his annexation of Crimea in 2014.
