The White House reversed itself on vaccine mandates on Thursday, ordering an estimated 100 million Americans to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or in some cases, undergo weekly testing for the virus.
Back in July, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that vaccine mandates were “not the federal government’s role.” But that statement aged faster than the president, and Joe Biden has gone from declaring victory over COVID to telling unvaccinated people his patience with them was “wearing thin.”
Biden blames the unvaccinated for the rise in COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths, and has called the current conditions a “pandemic of the unvaccinated.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said the new requirements would “crush an economy [Biden] has put on life support” and tweeted that it was “flat-out un-American.
“To Joe Biden, force is more important than freedom. Americans won’t stand for it,” he added.
