It was just announced that the president is positive for COVID-19. Millions of people across the nation are completely stunned by the news.
“Argentinian President Alberto Fernández has tested positive for COVID-19, about two months after he received a dose of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine,” reported The Hill.
“I’m already isolated, complying with the current protocol and following the instructions of my personal doctor,” wrote Fernández on Twitter. He has also “contacted the people I met in the last 48 hours” to notify them.
While getting vaccinated does not fully prevent contracting the virus, the Russian Sputnik V vaccine is reportedly supposed to give “around 92% protection against Covid-19,” reported the BBC.
There are a few conclusions to draw, based upon Fernández’s diagnosis. He may have fallen into that 8% quadrant, however rare. It is also possible that the dose he received was somehow ineffective.
A more extreme conclusion could be that the Russian vaccine isn’t as effective as originally advertised, however, there is no evidence to suggest it. More than likely, Fernández fell into the 8% who still get the virus after being recently vaccinated.
