A statue of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th U.S. president, was vandalized at San Francisco City Hall over the weekend.
Red paint was splashed over Lincoln’s face and outlined his name on the statue.
It was not immediately known who defaced the statue or why they did it, but a city committee earlier this month recommended changing the name of Abraham Lincoln High School because he supposedly treated Native Americans badly.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the vandalism corresponded to the anniversary of the hanging of 38 Sioux warriors during the Dakota Uprising, which happened during Lincoln’s administration.
I’m sure we can find things to complain about or blame with any prominent U.S. political figure in history, but I’m also sure it is not beneficial for us to do so generations or even hundreds of years after the fact when so many things have changed.
