The Oakland Unified School District voted unanimously Wednesday to defund and disband its own police force as a nod to the Black Lives Matter movement.
The “George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate Oakland Schools Police Department” will take the $2.5 million the school district spent on 10 police officers and administrators and put it toward “restorative justice efforts” beginning in 2021.
The police officers protected schools against gang violence and mass shooting events, but numerous speakers said that students of color felt “unsafe” with the officers present.
San Francisco’s school board voted similarly to cut ties with the local police department, while the Los Angeles attempted to defund its police but could not agree on a move to do so.
Let’s hope their restorative practice “circles” are bulletproof.
