The Pentagon said Tuesday that there was “no corroborating evidence” to suggest that reports about Russian operatives offering bounties to the Taliban for targeting U.S. military have any credibility.
The issue came about when the New York Times falsely reported that President Donald Trump was briefed about the issue and that he didn’t take any action on it.
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said that Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were never briefed on the intel because it was never verified. They have now been briefed, and administration officials also briefed members of Congress.
Trump is in the process of withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan to end the war that has been going on there since 2001.
