Vice President and coronavirus task force head Mike Pence told Breitbart News that China “let the world down” by not being honest and transparent about the coronavirus pandemic, and that the Communist nation must be held accountable for its actions.
Pence also said that the World Health Organization was China’s “willing partner in withholding from the United States and the wider world vital information about the coronavirus that would have made it possible for us to stand up a national response sooner,” noting that U.S. personnel were not even allowed into China until mid-February to see what was happening there.
The WHO tried to defend itself after Pence’s comments, saying that its work with China was “identical” to its work with every other member state and that it is “science-based.”
“I don’t want to get out in front of what President Trump will ultimately decide, but I think we all know in this administration that we have to make sure that something like this can never happen again,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in an earlier interview.
Trump had already halted U.S. funding to the WHO in April and has said that major reforms are needed before his administration would resume funding.
