House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is facing a mutiny from Democrats. Several prominent Democrat representatives just broke from Pelosi on the $3 trillion pandemic relief bill. While the bill still passed, the lack of unity was striking in a Congress so thoroughly controlled by Pelosi.
Numerous swing state Democrats have come out in opposition to both the ridiculous price tag on the bill and the provisions that have nothing to do with pandemic relief.
Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) said, “Unfortunately, many Member of Congress — including some in my own party — have decided to use this package as an opportunity to make political statements and propose a bill that goes far beyond pandemic relief and has no chance at becoming law, further delaying the help so many need.”
Republican strategists weighed in on the bill saying, “People are struggling to make rent and figure out how to put enough food on the table for their kids. But what is the House Democrats’ priority? A $3 trillion grab bag of long-time liberal priorities from marijuana to tax breaks for blue state millionaires to ‘environmental justice.’ It’s hard to illustrate better just how out of touch they are from the American people.”
Swing state Democrats are already heavily threatened in this upcoming election. While Nancy Pelosi will be safe in her California district, other Democrats have to be careful.
This could be the first of many legislative rifts in the Democrat party as the election draws nearer.
