Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) is polling eight points above his Democrat challenger, Michael Franken, in the latest Des Moines Register poll.
Grassley had 47% support in the poll compared to Franken’s 39%. Grassley also had 46% approval and 44% disapproval.
Franken, a veteran, faced controversy for saying that he “did not serve” in the military for President Joe Biden’s critics (which are the vast majority of Americans these days).
But despite his opponent’s gaffe, the pollster explained that he has the smallest lead in recent elections, and might still be vulnerable in November.
“It is his weakest showing since 1980. It’s a solid lead. But it’s just not as huge as we’ve seen in the past,” pollster J. Ann Selzer said.
