Twitter went a step too far and removed a tribute video for George Floyd posted by the official Team Trump campaign account. This latest example of censorship shows that Twitter is out of control.
Twitter claimed the video was taken down in “response to a report from a copyright holder.”
The video tribute both called for justice for George Floyd who wrongfully died in police custody. The video also condemned the violence and rioting that followed Floyd’s death.
Trump spokesman Andrew Clark said, “From the dubious removal of the hilarious Nickelback video to capricious fact checks and manipulated media labels to questionable claims of copyright, Twitter has repeatedly failed to explain why their rules seem to only apply to the Trump campaign but not to others. Censoring out the president’s important message of unity around the George Floyd protests is an unfortunate escalation of this double standard.”
Big social media companies like Twitter and Facebook have been partisan for some time and their actions have pushed the President to look into a legislative response.
For Twitter to remove a video that finds common ground for people of all political ideologies is unacceptable. Hiding behind copyright claims is not an excuse to censor information.
