Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is refusing to attend President Joe Biden’s first address to Congress, claiming that “very strict COVID protocols” will prevent her from attending.
Ocasio-Cortez said during a virtual town hall, “I would love to attend the joint address. Unfortunately, there are very strict COVID provisions that the House has put in place. So, I do not believe I will be able to enter the chamber for the joint address.”
While Ocasio-Cortez claims she would love to attend the event, there is reason to doubt that sentiment.
Ocasio-Cortez represents the far-left socialist wing of the Democrat Party, and the differences between the socialists and the old guard in the Democrat Party are stark. The bad blood between Ocasio-Cortez and old guard Democrats has only gotten worse especially with former President Trump no longer uniting the Democrat Party.
As for the “very strict COVID protocols,” it seems that Democrats have gone overboard. The House chamber can hold 1,000 attendees for the address, but the event is only going to have 200 attendees.
With vaccinations widespread, such a restrictive policy seems excessive. Democrats want to maintain the illusion that coronavirus should terrify Americans even though the crisis is very much past. If Biden was truly confident in vaccinations, he should expand the attendance of his first address to Congress.
