A new poll shows that House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is well on the way to leading the Republican party.
A survey conducted by Axios-Survey Monkey found that McCarthy was the most popular Republican leader in the party. The poll found that he held a 38% approval rate and was way ahead of Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
The most significant finding of the poll had to do with the response of former President Trump’s base.
The poll found that “Republican respondents who voted for Trump in November gave McCarthy a high net favorable rating (+31) and McConnell a high net unfavorable rating (-18).”
McCarthy recently met with Trump in Florida and seems to understand that aligning himself with Trump could be the key to rising to the top of the Republican party.
While McCarthy’s star rises, McConnell finds himself under scrutiny by Republicans and will likely never again enjoy the influence he had before the 2020 elections.
