Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) had an important question for the NBA and Nike on Twitter Tuesday.
“Will you pledge you are #slavefree?” he asked of the two organizations, who have publicly supported Black Lives Matter and demanded America atone for its history of slavery.
Nike in particular uses Chinese forced labor its from imprisoned ethnic Muslim Uyghur citizenry to make its shoes, and many NBA players endorse Nike products.
Apple, BMW, Gap, Huawei, Nike, Samsung, Sony, and Volkswagen are other companies that have been reported to use Chinese forced labor in their manufacturing processes.
While Nike and the NBA have made a huge deal of their disgust for the slavery that existed in the U.S., and rightly so; Hawley may have a point about Americans being far too willing to condone slavery in other countries that is still going on today.
