House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Saturday at Tribune Fest in Texas that impeachment of President Donald Trump was “worth” losing the House.
“People say you have to take a political risk doing that,” she went on. “That doesn’t matter. Our first responsibility is to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
Pelosi announced Tuesday that a formal impeachment inquiry into Trump would go forward in six House committees, although she has not called a vote of the entire House, which is required for impeachment proceedings to begin.
The Trump administration released a transcript of a phone call he had on July 25 with Ukraine’s president. A whistleblower report concerning that call has also been released.
Republicans have begun to find inconsistencies in the report and want to speak to the sources who contributed to the secondhand document.
