It’s the end of an era. A huge figure in the world of music just suddenly died, and fans are in mourning. We’ve lost a legend.
At 77-years-old, it is being reported that Dr. John passed away of an apparent heart attack “toward the break of day” on Thursday. This is according to the musician’s publicist speaking on behalf of the family.
Dr. John was a New Orleans fixture — a consummate singer and piano player who broke the mold, unafraid to blend black and white musical styles to create a distinct, funky sound.
The family’s statement went on to say that that they thank “all whom have shared his unique musical journey” requested privacy as they grieved his passing.
Louisana Gov. Joe Bell Edwards called Dr. John “a true Louisiana legend” who “showed the world Louisiana’s rich musical heritage, and his passion for music has left a mark on the industry unlike any other.”
Additional tributes poured in upon the news of his death, including from Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. “God bless Dr. John peace and love to all his family I love the doctor peace and love,” he tweeted.
