Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) is accusing President Trump of “Historic corruption” after Trump commuted the sentence of GOP operative Roger Stone.
Romney called the president’s action “unprecedented, historic corruption: an American president commutes the sentence of a person convicted by a jury of lying to shield that very president.”
President Trump commuted Stone’s 40-month sentence that was set to begin on Tuesday.
The White House issued a statement saying,
Roger Stone is a victim of the Russia Hoax that the Left and its allies in the media perpetuated for years in an attempt to undermine the Trump Presidency. There was never any collusion between the Trump Campaign, or the Trump Administration, with Russia.
Not only were the circumstances around Stone’s “crimes” dubious, but his health was also a major concern.
Stone said his sentence was a “death” sentence due to coronavirus and credited President Trump with saving his life.
