Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has reversed his previously spineless stance and threatened President Biden with the ultimatum that Republicans will not work with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling in December.
McConnell initially cut a deal with Democrats to suspend the debt ceiling for two months, but after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) “childish behavior,” McConnell’s dealmaking days are over.
Schumer’s rant on the Senate floor was so out of line that even Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) confronted Schumer, saying his speech was “fucking stupid.”
Senator Manchin’s analysis is spot-on as Schumer has turned McConnell from a spineless coward to a strong enemy. Schumer may very well have cost Democrats any chance of raising the debt ceiling in December.
McConnell sent a letter to the White House saying, “Last night, Republicans filled the leadership vacuum that has troubled the Senate since January. I write to inform you that I will not provide such assistance again if your all-Democrat government drifts into another avoidable crisis.”
The ball is in the President’s court, and it is up to him to reach across the aisle. Democrats will have to give in to Republican demands in the future if they want assistance with the debt ceiling.
