Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) outlined the procedure for a possible impeachment trial against President Trump, which seemingly indicates that McConnell aligns with Democrats on the issue.
However, McConnell seems to be playing both sides as the Senate schedule delays the beginning of an impeachment trial until the day before President Trump leaves office.
McConnell said in the memo: “Again, it would require the consent of all 100 Senators to conduct any business of any kind during the scheduled pro forma sessions prior to January 19, and therefore the consent of all 100 Senators to begin acting on any articles of impeachment during those sessions.”
The timeline would push the impeachment trial into a 50-50 Senate, presumably under the direction of incoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
Deranged Democrats are not above wasting the first months of the Biden presidency impeaching a man who is already out of office, which certainly would frustrate Biden. As for Mitch McConnell, at least he has avoided having to make the difficult choice of standing strong against Democrats or betraying the leader of his own party.
