Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) just announced an impeachment decision. There is nothing he can do about it — this is a tragic turn of events.
“I would have no choice but to take it up,” McConnell stated, addressing the next step should the House impeach President Trump. “How long you’re on it is a whole different matter,” he noted.
McConnell went on to say that “I would have no choice but to take it up based on a Senate rule on impeachment,” meaning it is out of his hands. The Senate will vote on impeachment if the House acts.
However, as McConnell pointed out, he gets to decide how long they deliberate the matter. It is a good bet to assume that he won’t let the question of impeachment linger; Democrats just want to grandstand.
Expect Senate debate to be limited in scope to avoid drawing it out unnecessarily. Of course, Democrats would first have to impeach Trump in the House — and that’s nowhere near a done deal.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi better wise up quickly. Her rush to impeach will result in devastating electoral consequences for her party. On second thought, perhaps she should just go for it.
