House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has suggested that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is immoral because he doesn’t want to give federal money to states as part of a coronavirus aid package.
States that have shut down non-essential businesses are now losing tax revenue at the same time that they may have also spent extra money on medical supplies and ventilators needed by hospitals.
McConnell has suggested that federal aid to the states could be enabling them to continue poor spending habits and mismanagement, which could then be continued at the expense of the federal budget. He said it might be preferrable to allow the states to go bankrupt rather than receive federal bailouts.
“Speaking of Mitch, what’s gotten into him?” Pelosi said Friday. “The president is asking people to inject Lysol into their lungs and Mitch is saying that states should go bankrupt,” adding, “Republicans reject science and reject governance.”
It’s clear that there will be an uphill battle to maintain any semblance of fiscal responsibility in Democrat states if Pelosi bullies Republicans into voting her way.
