U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has left for Qatar to open peace negotiations between the Taliban and the U.S. backed government in Kabul.
Negotiations have broken down numerous times and the war has gone on in spite of the best efforts of President Trump.
However, this latest development looks promising as the Taliban have finally agreed to come forward and negotiate with Kabul in spite of viewing them as an illegitimate government.
President Trump said, “A lot of people thought that my natural instinct is war. No, my natural instinct is actually peace. We’re getting along very, very well with the Taliban and very well with Afghanistan and its representatives, and we’ll see how it all goes.”
President Trump’s ability t0 even get peace talks going is commendable and hopefully, they will lead to yet another peace treaty.
America has for too long been embroiled in the graveyard of empires. Too many lives lost and too much money spent. Trump is right to pursue peace and to get US troops out of harm’s way.
