The news just dropped about a Memorial Day ban and America is furious. Millions nationwide can’t believe that this has happened — and people are now calling for a reversal of the stunning decision.
According to a Fox News report, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has decided that events at VA-operated gravesites on Memorial Day cannot go forward in New York, including flag-placing ceremonies.
“For decades, the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other groups have devoted part of the holiday to place small American flags at the graves of veterans and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice,” reported Fox News.
However, the VA has reportedly determined that “Long Island has not yet met the state criteria for reopening” due to the COVID-19 crisis “which is why limits on social gatherings on Long Island are still in place.”
Long Island is located within Suffolk County, which is where one of the gravesites is located. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has begged the VA to reconsider its position because of what this means for kids.
Especially since some New York beaches are re-opening for the holiday, Bellone believes that this annual observance should go forward, because it is about “teaching the next generation the importance of sacrifice and what that means.”
