Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) just said ‘yes’ and the Democrats are cheering. But their glee may soon turn into regret — especially if the powerful Republican springs a political trap, which he has been known to do.
“Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee have previously requested Mr. Mueller appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify about his investigation,” said Graham in a statement. “That request will be granted.”
It is obvious Graham has an angle here, otherwise, he wouldn’t be granting the request. After all, he also noted sarcastically that “Mr. Mueller is willing — and also capable — of defending the Mueller investigation through an oped in the Washington Post.”
He is right. If Mueller can write an op-ed for a left-wing newspaper talking up his ‘collusion’ probe, then, by all means, bring him before the Senate Judiciary Committee and put him under oath. The sparks are bound to start flying.
If Democrats were smart, they wouldn’t want Mueller anywhere near Graham’s committee — which he serves as chairman — but they are apparently accustomed to losing by now. Simply put, Graham will destroy Mueller; it won’t even be a contest.
But the question remains: Will Mueller accept Graham’s invitation or balk? It ultimately depends on whether Democrats pulling his strings think it would be beneficial. Let’s hope they commit another election-year error and bring him before Congress.
