Legendary actor John Wayne’s legacy is under attack as Democrats in Orange County, California, want his name removed from the John Wayne Airport.
Democrats demanded a name change because of “racist and bigoted statements” made by Wayne in an interview in 1971.
In a resolution introduced on Friday, the Orange County Democratic Party said, “Orange County is now a diverse region far different from the time when John Wayne was chosen as namesake for the airport.”
This isn’t the first time Democrats have tried to strip the actor’s name from the airport, but now they are invoking Black Lives Matter and the ongoing racial protests.
The statement continued, “A national movement to remove white supremacist symbols and names is reshaping American institutions, monuments, businesses, nonprofits, sports leagues and teams. It is widely recognized that racist symbols produce lasting physical and psychological stress and trauma particularly to Black communities, people of color and other oppressed groups.”
While the Orange County Democrats demand John Wayne be canceled for racist statements from the ’70s, they have been suspiciously silent about Joe Biden’s past racist comments.
