Trump 2020 campaign senior adviser Lara Trump defended her father-in-law on Sunday for agreeing with Michigan rallygoers who shouted “Lock her up!” about Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D).
The prresident said to rally attendees about a kidnapping plot against Whitmer, “Then I guess they said she was threatened, right? She was threatened. And she blamed me. She blamed me. And our people were the ones that worked with her people so let’s see what happens. Let’s see what happens.”
“Lock them all up,” he said in response to the chants from the audience.
CNN’s Jake Tapper questioned why President Trump would use such “heightened rhetoric” at a time when Whitmer’s life was in danger. Never mind that the authorities arrested 13 people in the plot, so she’s probably not under threat anymore.
Lara Trump said that the president’s comments had “nothing to do” with the threats against Whitmer, but showed that people were “very frustrated” with Whitmer’s continued lockdowns and that Trump was “having fun” at the rally. “It’s a fun, light atmosphere,” she said. “Of course, he wasn’t encouraging people to threaten this woman. That is ridiculous.”
