WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange was denied bail by a British judge on Wednesday after she denied a request by the U.S. for him to be extradited there.
District Judge Vanessa Baraitser said Assange had to stay in jail in the UK while her decision is appealed because he is a likely flight risk.
Assange has been in jail in the UK since 2019 awaiting extradition, but Baraitser said she didn’t want to send Assange to the U.S. for health reasons.
She was afraid the 49-year-old would kill himself if he was jailed in the so-called harsh conditions of the U.S. prison system.
Assange faces espionage charges for his part in WikiLeaks’ publication of classified and secret military documents ten years ago.
