President Joe Biden demanded on Friday that Congress pass his infrastructure and so-called Build Back Better spending plans “right now,” after jobless claims were lower than expected, having dropped several weeks in a row now.
“I’m asking every House member, member of the House of Representatives, to vote yes on both these bills, right now,” Biden said. “Send the infrastructure bill to my desk. Send the Build Back Better bill to the Senate.”
Biden was also reportedly making phone calls to members of Congress on Friday to try to build more support for his bills. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had planned to hold a vote on both bills later Friday, but only ended up having the infrastructure vote, which did pass Friday night.
Biden tried to claim that the spenidng bills would further improve the economy, but there is little evidence that this is the case.
“If your number one issue is the cost of living, the number one priority should be seeing Congress pass these bills,” he said, even though trillions in new spending is much more likely to make inflation worse rather than better.
