Republican lawmakers are expressing “grave concern” about the Biden administration’s move to resume funding for a so-called Palestinian refugee agency of the UN, alleging anti-Israel bias by the group and affiliation swith Hamas, which the US has designated a terrorist organization.
A group of 21 Republican senators put their concerns in a letter to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken about the funding for the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which it says defines “refugees” differently than the rest of the world.
To UNRWA, the so-called Palestinians that it calls refugees are citizens of countries in the area, unlike other refugees around the world.
They asserted that the administration had not thought through its plans to restore the funding, and that it had not tried to get significant reforms before doing so.
The Biden administration has admitted that the organization has been accused of anti-Semitism, racism and discrimination.
