President Joe Biden has revoked former President Donald Trump’s ban on Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat, opting instead to have the commerce secretary investigate apps tied to foreign adversaries that may be a risk to data privacy or national security in the U.S.
Trump had sought to ban the apps and others, but his orders were tied up in the courts.
TikTok recently changed its terms of service to say that it would collect biometric data, including a “faceprint,” from users.
A Biden senior official said that the U.S. was “committed to promoting an open, interoperable, reliable, and secure internet and to protecting human rights online and offline, and to supporting a vibrant global digital economy.”
Countries like China, they said, did not share those values.
