Associated Press journalists said they have observed large numbers of Haitians being released into the U.S. rather than deported as the government claims publicly.
The AP also has statements from two anonymous officials confirming the release of the illegal immigrants, nearly 15,000 of which have been camped under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas for up to a week.
The Haitians were released “very, very large scale,” one official said, putting the number in the thousands. Most were told to appear at an immigration office in 60 days, which is faster than if they were going before an asylum court.
Publicly, the U.S. has advertised that planes would be taking off constantly to deport immigrants back to Haiti.
Most of those being allowed to stay in the country were pregnant women and families with young children, according to reports.
