As of Wednesday, President Joe Biden still planned to go to California and campaign for Governor Gavin Newsom, who is trying to stave off a recall in September, even with the volatile situation in Afghanistan.
“I can confirm, the president does still plan to go and campaign for Governor Newsom in California … that is still certainly his plan,” Psaki said.
Those plans could change now that Americans were attacked and at least 13 U.S. service members lost their lives in Kabul on Thursday, with more possible attacks imminent.
Conservative talk show host Larry Elder, who leads polls for who will replace Newsom if he is recalled, said he didn’t think Biden showing up would help Newsom anyway.
“His popularity now is in the low forties — I think I saw 41%. Most Americans don’t even believe he’s home — that somebody else is in charge. So it’s going to backfire,” Elder said, adding that he doesn’t believe Biden will actually show up.
