Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is blaming political differences for FEMA’s rejection of requests for individual assistance by Florida residents after tornados damaged more than 158 mostly senior homes.

84% of the seniors depended on Social Security, and DeSantis felt that qualified them for FEMA assistance. But FEMA denied the assistance, claiming that the scope of the damage was small enough that it should be able to be covered by the state without federal help.

But DeSantis thought the rejection was politically motivated.

“Floridians shouldn’t be punished for a disaster that was outside their control because of White House politics,” DeSantis said. “The scope of devastation in these communities makes it clear that survivors need additional assistance and I’m urging the Biden administration to reconsider its decision.”

Florida is appealing the decision and hopes FEMA will reconsider.
