An NBC poll–normally favorable to Democrats–showed that President Joe Biden has only a 37% approval rating on his handling of U.S.-Russia relations, while 50% disapproved.
The poll was released as Biden on Wednesday during a press conference gave tacit permission for Russia to invade Ukraine by saying he assumes Putin will do it.
He also said that he didn’t know whether the U.S. would take any action if Putin did invade.
Press Secretary Jen Psaki tried to do damage control after the press conference, saying, “If any Russian military forces move across the Ukrainian border, that’s a renewed invasion, and it will be met with a swift, severe, and united response from the United States and our Allies.”
“We want to remind the great powers that there are no minor incursions and small nations. Just as there are no minor casualties and little grief from the loss of loved ones,” Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday in response to Biden’s comments. “I say this as the President of a great power.”
