Breitbart commentator James Pinkerton pointed out that President Joe Biden’s recent climate deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping was reminiscent of former President Jimmy Carter’s 1979 deal with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.
The American public did not look kindly on Carter’s deal at the time, and history is likely to look at Biden’s deal with Communist China in a similarly negative way.
Carter’s SALT II treaty languished in the Senate and ratification was abandoned after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan later that year.
But Biden, who was in the Senate at the time, supported the treaty’s ratification and visited the USSR to show support. Biden even said that the USSR’s 42-year record of human rights abuses didn’t matter and that surely they would keep their word on arms control even though they broke every human rights agreement they ever made.
I wish I could say Biden has gotten less Communist-friendly and less naive in the intervening 41 years, but I fear that is not the case.
