The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that President Joe Biden’s immigration policies are giving Latin American families an incentive to separate, according to some who have come to the U.S. illegally.
By offering the opportunity to claim asylum if entering with a minor, some are sending one parent and child to the U.S. while the rest of the family stays behind.
“That creates an incentive for many in Central America to break up their families,” Latin America Journal editor David Luhnow said on Twitter about the article.
Biden is offering illegal immigrants awaiting an asylum hearing the chance to work and to petition the U.S. for their kids to live with them there.
For many families, it is the chance for at least some members to have a better life, but at what cost? Separating families is catastrophic, and it can make things worse for those who are left behind.
