New Mexico Democrat Rep. Xochitl Torres Small has broken with Joe Biden after he pledged to “transition” from the oil industry during the presidential debate Thursday night.
Biden made the comment to explain his position on banning fracking, but ended up going even further than the original comments.
“I disagree with VP Biden’s statement tonight,” Small said. “Energy is part of the backbone of New Mexico’s economy. We need to work together to promote responsible energy production and stop climate change, not demonize a single industry.”
She said her party is “out of touch with the reality on the ground” in New Mexico and that she would stand up to them.
Biden’s comments may have hurt his chances in the state, which is third in U.S. energy production and has had rapid growth due to energy production.
