Missouri Republican Senator Roy Blunt said Monday in a YouTube video that he plans to reitre from public office in 2022 and will not seek re-election.
Blunt will be the fifth incumbent Republican to retire from the Senate in 2022. At 71, he has spent more than three decades in public office locally and in Congress.
87-year old Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin are also considering retiring.
The retirements will not help the GOP regain the majority in the Senate in 2022 after two years at 50-50, with Vice President Kamala Harris as the tiebreaking vote.
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee executive director Christie Roberts said that “Senate Republicans have a retirement problem” because of the high number of Senate GOP retiring.
