Manfred Nowak, an expert from the U.N. Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty, claimed wrongly on Monday that 100,000 children were being detained by the White House under Trump, when the statistics he used were actually from the Obama administration and represented children detained during an entire year, 2015.
Several media outlets reported the story without checking their numbers, One America News Network said. Democrat politicians also tweeted their disgust, then later deleted their tweets.
“This is a disgusting result of Trump’s family separation policies- pushed by Stephen Miller who has cited white nationalist propaganda in promoting his views. It’s also, apparently, a violation of a U.N. treaty, the Convention on the Rights of the Child,” the DNC War Room wrote, and later deleted when they realized the numbers were from the Obama era.
HHS reported that it actuallly has around 3,900 unaccompanied children in custody at the current time and that numbers are going down this year.
In the fiscal year 2018-2019, 72,593 children were reunited with their parents or other relatives.
