Actor Jussie Smollet was indicted Monday on six new charges stemming from his attempt to fake a hate crime against himself in Chicago and falsely reporting it to police in January 2019.
Smollett had tried to blame Trump supporters for attacking him, but it was soon discovered that he had hired the attackers himself to fake the crime.
He was indicted on 16 counts of disorderly conduct, but the charges were dropped by then-State Attorney Kim Foxx in a move that angered police officials and others in the local government.
Police said Smollett was trying to boost his career when he staged the attack.
The new indictment for false reporting is an attempt to hold him responsible for his actions, which cost the city more than $100,000 to investigate at the time.
